Veteran British actor Sir Michael Caine, 90, has officially announced his retirement from acting following the release of his latest film The Great Escaper. In an interview with BBC Radio 4, Caine expressed that this decision feels like the right time to step back, having received exceptional reviews for his role in the film. He shared, “I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead, and it’s got incredible reviews. What am I going to do to beat this?”
Over his remarkable seven-decade career, Caine has starred in over 160 films, including classics like The Italian Job, Alfie, Get Carter, and more recent hits such as The Dark Knight trilogy and Inception. He won two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) and The Cider House Rules (1999). Despite his retirement, Caine is far from slowing down; he has shifted his focus to writing and is set to release his debut thriller novel, Deadly Game, in November 2023.
His final film, The Great Escaper, is based on the true story of a WWII veteran who escapes from his care home to attend a D-Day commemoration in France. Caine turned down the role multiple times, considering himself retired already, but eventually took on the project after feeling inspired by the story.
Fans around the world are reflecting on Caine’s vast contributions to cinema, which have spanned genres and generations. From his groundbreaking performances in the 1960s to his recent roles in blockbuster franchises, his presence on the screen will be deeply missed.
