Marvel Studios’ latest release, The Marvels, is already making waves as one of the most anticipated films of 2023. In this exclusive interview, we sat down with the powerhouse cast: Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau), and Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan). The trio opened up about their experiences working together, the challenges their characters face, and what the future holds for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Balancing Superhero Responsibilities and Personal Growth
Brie Larson, who reprises her role as Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel), spoke about the evolution of her character since her debut in 2019. “Carol has been on a journey that’s left her somewhat detached from her roots,” Larson explains. “She’s become a bit of a workaholic, and this movie really explores how she reconnects with the people she cares about.” This emotional depth adds complexity to Captain Marvel, as she navigates the consequences of her actions in past films.
Teyonah Parris, who plays Monica Rambeau, shed light on her character’s newfound powers. “Monica is still figuring out how to control her abilities, and The Marvels dives deeper into her backstory, especially her relationship with Carol,” Parris said. Monica’s powers, linked to the electromagnetic spectrum, present both opportunities and challenges as she faces new threats.
Iman Vellani, who made her MCU debut in Ms. Marvel, plays Kamala Khan, a teenager who idolizes Captain Marvel. Vellani’s excitement about working alongside her heroes was palpable: “Kamala is still in awe of both Carol and Monica, but she’s also coming into her own as a hero. It’s fun to see how these dynamics play out on-screen.” Vellani’s youthful energy is a fresh addition to the MCU, providing a bridge between old and new generations of superheroes.
A Unique Challenge: Synchronizing Powers
One of the central themes of The Marvels is the way the three characters’ powers are entangled. “It’s not just about their individual strengths, but how they learn to work together,” said Larson. The trio’s powers are connected by quantum entanglement, forcing them to switch places every time they use their abilities. This leads to intense action sequences, as well as comedic moments that showcase their growing bond.
What’s Next for the MCU?
While the cast remained tight-lipped about specific future MCU projects, Parris hinted at more collaborations between heroes: “This movie sets the stage for bigger team-ups. Monica, Carol, and Kamala are just the beginning of something larger.” Vellani also expressed her hopes of seeing more young heroes emerge in the MCU, alluding to her character’s potential role in assembling a new generation of Avengers.
With the release of The Marvels drawing closer, fans can expect high-energy action, heartfelt character development, and major implications for the MCU’s future.
